PEONY ALTERNATIVES

Peonies are the hottest flowers right now. Instagram is full of these beautiful romantic blooms with colours ranging from white through to pink, coral and burgundy.ing

Unfortunately for me, my dream of having a peony bouquet has been dashed by the date of our wedding. Peonies are only available in the UK between May and July. So with the end of the season I’ve put together some alternatives to tide you over until spring.

Garden Roses

In my opinion the garden roses are the next best thing to peonies and in a completely different league to normal roses. They are available all year round and have large feminine heads with a beautiful fragrance and give off that same romantic feel. Their big romantic ruffles, high petal count and exquisite fragrance make them a perfect substitution for peonies and separates them from ‘standard roses’. Popular David Austin roses include Juliet, Patience and Keira. These are often the garden roses you see in bridal bouquets

Ranunculus

If you’re looking for a peony alternative in Winter/Spring, then this is your flower. Ranunculus are like a miniature peony and are generally available from January to March. Their texture and shape is similar to a peony and are often mistaken for them! Ranunculus come in a range of colours from white-pink and coral-purple!

Cabbage Rose

Also known as Rosa Centifolia, provence roses, the cabbage rose is characterized by the complex arrangements of petals and are most commonly found in shades of pink but are also available in white to dark red-purple.

Double Flowering Tulip

Double-flowered tulips have so many petals that they are nicknames as “peony-flowered tulips” and are available in Spring.
