POCKETS

Whilst walking around the beautiful streets of Corfu Town I wearily gave my fiancé my handbag to hold. My shoulder was sore from carrying it in the heat. He however had his iPhone, wallet, sun cream etc in his shorts pockets. It got us both asking the question, why are women not given pockets.

I tried on a wedding dress recently and was delighted when the assistant told me that one of them had pockets. Why didn’t all of them? Surely wedding dress designers realise that women want to be able to have their phones on them incase they want to take a selfie with some of their guests? Unfortunately, this particular dress wasn’t ‘the dress’ and there on no pockets in mine, I am considering asking if I could have some sewn in though! I’ve started looking at clutch bags to go with my dress but I would rather not be carrying a bag around with me on my wedding day!

Even when women are given pockets, they are generally useless. Either they look like they have pockets but they’re fake, or they’re too small or tight to fit more than a couple of coins in, and you wouldn’t be able to get them back out without doing a dance.

You may be sat there thinking to yourself that in the grand scheme of things, this is not a massive deal, and I agree. However, it does highlight to me one of the equalities which is still present in women’s fashion today and one that we generally just accept.

I suppose one could argue that men have to keep removing their keys, wallet etc from trouser to trouser, but I do the same thing from bag to bag as I don’t use the same handbag every day.

I love handbags don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it would be nice to leave the house without one!
