Tattoo removal is now a big industry.
There has been a 440% increase in money spent on removing them in the past decade.
Has this fad had its day?
My parents drummed into me from an early age that tattoos were bad. That didn't stop me wanting one. Through high school I would change my mind on what I would have if I could get one by the week.
This did however also put me off ever getting one. Why would I mark my body with something when I would probably change my mind about it the following week? I take off and change my jewelery and clothes daily so why would I ink my skin permanently?
An estimated 20 million people in the UK have at least 1 tattoo and around 1.5million Brits get add to their collection annually but 39% of people regret their tattoos.
Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Angelina jolie, Johnny Depp and Eva Longoria have removed their ex lovers names or changed them to another design, however David Beckhams bodyart has become one of his allures. An ex boyfriend of mine had the word 'saint' tattooed right across his lower back in the 'tramp-stamp' region. Needless to say he was far from a 'saint'. Victoria Beckham has had her tribute to her husband on her back removed.
71% of employers say that potential employees tattoos would put them off hiring them. Visible tattoos are seen as unprofessional and put managers off.
Once I saw some marks on a patient I was nursing’s arm. She explained how she had removed a tattoo in the 90s that she had needled in her teens. She then showed me a patch of skin next to it, which she had another tattoo removed more recently, but there wasn't a mark to be seen.
Tattoo removal itself can be much more painful (and costly) than the original tattoo being needles in the first instance. She was one of the 39% who regretted hers.
I can see the beauty in tattoos, and sometimes they have a beautiful meaning behind them but I’ve also seen saggy tattoos, tacky, discoloured, disfigured, stretched and faded tattoos.
